WOODBLOCK PRINTING

June 2010
Resident artist ANNIE SILVERMAN

26th - 27th June 2010 (10 - 4)

Course description

Experiment with nontraditional woodcut printmaking techniques that yield contemporary, expressive results.  Building a vocabulary of carved and incised marks on wood, students will make a set of plates that can be used alone or in conjunction with one another, as well as with additional prints. A dialogue between carving, and printing begins, with the conversation turning spicy when multiple layers of colored ink in varying degrees of transparency are introduced and the improvisation begins. This is an unique way to work with woodblock that can have the immediacy of collage, yet with the possibility of multiples and work within a series for which printmaking is ideal.

The class also covers: tool care and sharpening, work with stencils and masks, and chine colle’ , a way of collage thin papers during the printing process.

All levels welcome.

ETCHING
PHOTO ETCHING

July 2010

Resident artist AOIFE MC GARRIGLE

10th - 11th July 2010 (10 - 4) COLOUR ETCHING

17th - 18th July 2010 (10 - 4) PHOTO ETCHING

Course description

Colour  Etching

During this course you will learn a range of skills that can be applied to the process of etching. Tuition will cover basic hard/soft ground etching and drypoint, through to more advanced techniques such as aquatint and multi-plate colour printing. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous experience.

Photo-Etching

Learn the basics of photo-etching and photo polymer printmaking. The process is an innovative new etching process, which allows the artist to produce photographic and digital images printed with the quality of a traditional etching. Students will learn how to expose and print photo polymer plates. This workshop will also explore photo-etching techniques. This process allows the artist to combine photo imagery with traditional etching techniques such as aquatint and hard/soft ground on the same plate. This offers the artist more freedom to alter the image with autographic marks.

Experimental printmaking techniques for artists

August 2010
Resident artist Danielle Creannaune

14th - 15th August 2010 (10 - 4)

Course description

This workshop will look the meaning of experimental in terms of both image-making and also the use of materials. It will encourage a spontaneous approach to working intuitively and directly onto plates. To develop this approach, we will use the surrounding natural landscape at Clò to inspire our image-making.

We will explore techniques to achieve unexpected textures and results; look at layering various techniques within the image; and also the affects of using transparent colours. The main processes explored will be monotype, relief and etching, however, techniques learnt can equally be adapted for use across other print media.

If students have exising image plates that they would like to experiment with then they are welcome to bring them along to combine with other new images.

No previous experience is neccessary.

Etching & Chine Collé

August 2010
Resident artist Danielle Creannaune

21st - 22nd August 2010 (10 - 4)

Course description

Chine-collé is a printmaking technique in which the image is transferred to a

thinner paper surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process.

Chine-collé roughly translates from French, “chine” meaning tissue and “collé”

meaning paste. It is generally thought that the term "Chine" was used because the

thin tissue paper was traditionally imported from China, India or Japan.

In this course, we will learn about it´s application in the etching process, however, the techniques can equally be adapted for use in lithography and relief.

Students will learn about different varieties of suitable Japanese papers; how to mix and apply wheat starch paste glue made; how to register and apply the chine collé at the time of printing; how to dry, handle and chine collé prints; and how chine collé can be innovatively combined with other printing techniques.

If students have exising image plates that they would like to experiment with then they are welcome to bring them along or alternatively create new images.

No previous experience is neccessary. Students are encouraged to come prepared with working drawings or an image ideas.

Cost: €175
