Samkura
Project Title: SAMKURA [English Shamrock, Gaelic Seamróg]
IRELAND, GREECE, PORTUGAL
3RD Countries; GEORGIA and ARMENIA
Project Concept:
SAMKURA is the name for a small earth covering plant which has a leaf composed of a stem and three interconnected leaflets. The name in its Georgian form suggests the image of “three ears connected together.”
SAMKURA visualises the co-operation of a constellation of cultures (Ireland, Greece and Portugal) represented by the three leaves or ‘ears’, whose stem is represented by Georgia and Armenia.
SAMKURA is a trans-European art and culture exchange linking European limits.
SAMKURA creates the conditions for understanding contemporary art as a language of cross-cultural communication. Research, development and dissemination of new art works will take place in a context of a thematic artistic exchange focusing on cultural and linguistic specificity.
The lead organization Cló will be responsible for providing the practical support for the production of art works in the context of an artist-in-residence program that will take place in Ireland, Portugal and Georgia.
Cló invite a leading institution for contemporary Art in Greece to support the professional development of SAMKURA through sponsoring an international forum that will provide the curatorial structure for an exhibition and publication in Georgia and Armenia.
Participating artists will be selected through agreement of the co-partners and will be drawn from all 5 participating countries with a minimum of 4 participants from each of the participating EU states with 4 from the combined ENP countries (Armenia and Georgia)

Anthelion
The "Anthelion" project, initiated by artist Ian Joyce and Cló Ceardlann, focuses on developing artistic and cultural links between European peripheries, interpreting contemporary artistic expression as a medium of communication between culturally and linguistically distinctive regions.
Through "Anthelion" Cló Ceardlann presented the works and invited the participation of artists from the Caucasus in the context of an exhibition and workshop symposium presenting contemporary Art of the Gealtacht, the Gaelic speaking regions in Ireland.
The symposium inaugurated an exhibition of new works from the Gaeltacht which will took place from the 30th of October to the 4th of November 2007.

Tearmann {2004 – 2008}
Tearmann was a cross border Artist Development Programme which made available an outstanding facility and contemporary cultural resource to a generation of future arts administrators from both sides of the border and the border counties. Taking inspiration from the gaelic term "Tearmann", meaning sanctuary, this project focused the spirit of Donegal (Dún na nGall) in terms of landscape, culture and environment. The programme offered a structured and practical basis, in a culturally unique context, for artists to develop their skills and career. Tearmann was accredited by the Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, The National University of Ireland, Galway, who offered a 'Diploma in Arts Practice'.

Úr Exhibition
International project of Contemporary Art of the Gaeltacht
Frustrated with 'the anodyne mainstream in Ireland' and a total lack of awareness of contemporary Gaelic culture, artist Ian Joyce and Cló Ceardlann na gCnoc invited international curator Miroslava Hajek to work on ÚR, an international project of contemporary art from the Gaeltacht.
Taking over a former carpet factory on the industrial estate in Gweedore, a group of 13 artists from the Gaeltacht, including Ian Joyce, Oona Hyland, Bernadette Cotter, Loic Jourdain, Ursula Kavanagh, Sarah Lewtas, Maggie Madden, Kevin Mc Gee, Caroline Patten, Kevin Quille, Siobhán Ní Ghabhann, Colin Russell & Úna Ní Shé created a work-in-progress exhibition and symposium which was exhibited throughout Donegal and later traveled to The Irish Cultural Centre in Paris where the exhibition was a great success.

Malartú
This is a 3 month exchange scholarship with Scotland using artist-in-residence- house and workshop facility, currently held by Mairí Smith. This is funded by Colmcille and on completion of this years programme we hope to apply to Colmcille for a new cycle of the project.
